Ayer se estrenó Westworld, la nueva
serie de HBO y la puedo resumir en dos palabras: promete y cumple. El
canal es conocido por ser cuna de algunas de las mejores series
dramáticas de todos los tiempos (si no fuera por Breaking Bad de AMC
tendría prácticamente el monopolio): Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Game of
Thrones, Mad Men, The Wire por decir sólo algunas, así que es fácil
darle carta blanca a cualquiera de sus nuevas producciones. El canal, por lo
menos acá en Chile (y al parecer en el resto de latino américa) es uno
de los pocos que sigue transmitiendo en idioma original subtitulado,
lo que es muy respetable (y valiente) que junto a sus estrenos mundiales, invita a seguir viendo ese aparato en extinción llamado televisión. Aún así en los últimos años HBO ha
estrenado varios dramas que parecían prometer y no lograron cumplir
las expectativas, dígase; True Detective temporada 2 (que tuvo sus
momentos), The Leftovers (que parecer estar repuntando), Girls (que
se fue desinflando) entre otras, haciendo de Game of Thrones su único
caballo de carrera.
Yesterday was released Westworld, the new HBO series and can be summarized in two words: promised and fulfilled. The channel is known for being the birthplace of some of the best drama series of all time (if it were not for AMC's Breaking Bad would have a virtual monopoly): Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, The Wire to say a few, so it's easy to give carte blanche to any of its new productions. The channel, at least here in Chile (and apparently the rest of latin america) it is one of the few who continues to broadcast in their original language subtitling, which it is very respectable (and brave) than with their world premieres it invites us to keep watching that thing in extinction called television. Yet in recent years, HBO has released several dramas that seemed to promise and failed to meet expectations, I mean; True Detective's season 2 (which had its moments), The Leftovers (which seem to be picking), Girls (which was deflating) among others, making Game of Thrones their only racehorse.
Westworld está basada en la película
del mismo nombre que dirigió y escribió Michael Crichton (el
creador de Jurassic Park) en 1973 sobre un parque de diversiones
futurista ambientado en el viejo oeste donde los robots empiezan a
fallar con consecuencias desastrosas (¿dije Jurassic Park?). La
serie mantiene la misma premisa trayendola al formato Game of
Thrones: oscuridad, giros inesperados, misterios, innumerables
personajes, desnudos, violencia gráfica (así que es fácil imaginar
que los personajes principales van a empezar a morir en cualquier
momento). Los responsable detrás de esta actualización son Lisa Joy
y Jonathan Nolan (hermano de Christopher Nolan y co-guionista de
algunas de sus películas más exitosas como The Dark Knight y
Interstellar). Nolan se pone en modo director, guionista y productor
lo que ya son varios puntos a favor de la serie. Y si eso no bastara
los protagonistas son nada menos y nada más que Anthony Hopkins
(como el creador del parque), Ed Harris (como un misterioso
visitante), Evan Rachel Wood (una bella androide) entre otros
conocidos rostros del cine y la televisión que se presenta a lo
largo del primer episodio mostrando sus cargos fuera y dentro del
parque, ya sea como visitantes, encargados o
robots/androides/vaqueros/prostitutas. Demás está entonces decir que produce J. J. Abrams (Star Wars VII, Star Trek, Lost) y la
música la compone Ramin Djawadi, el hombre detrás del soundtrack de
Game of Thrones, junto a temas populares en sus versiones
westerizadas (Paint it Black, Black Hole Sun). En realidad no quiero revelar más detalles de la trama para que si les das una oportunidad puedas disfrutarla tal como yo lo hice (que ni siquiera vi los trailers): vírgen (siempre es mejor).
Westworld is based on the movie of the same name directed and wrote by Michael Crichton (creator of Jurassic Park) in 1973 about a futuristic amusement park set in the old west where robots begin to fail with disastrous consequences (I said Jurassic Park?). The series respects the same premise bringing it to the Game of Thrones' format: darkness, unexpected twists, mysteries, numberless characters, nudity, graphic violence (so it is easy to imagine that the main characters will start to die at any time). The responsible behind this update/remake are Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan and co-writer of some of his most successful films like The Dark Knight and Interstellar). Nolan makes roles of director, screenwriter and producer which are already several points in favor of the series. And if that was not enough the protagonists are nothing less and nothing more than Anthony Hopkins (as the creator of the park), Ed Harris (as a mysterious visitor), Evan Rachel Wood (as a beautiful android) among other familiar faces from film and television presented during the first episode showing their positions inside and outside the park, either as visitors, managers or robots/androids/cowboys/prostitutes. Needless to say then that produces J. J. Abrams (Star Wars VII, Star Trek, Lost) and the music is composed by Ramin Djawadi, the man behind the soundtrack of Game of Thrones, along popular songs in their western versions (Paint it Black, Black Hole Sun). I really don't want to reveal more details of the plot so if you give it an opportunity can enjoy it as I did (I didn't even see the trailers): virgin (always better).
A diferencia de la película original,
más allá de un parque temático (y todo lo retro que puede sonar
eso) acá se la juegan por la ambiguedad y apuntar a la
deconstrucción de videojuegos basados en mundos abiertos como GTA o
el más obvio ejemplo, Red Dead Redemption (ambos de la factoría
Rockstar) y así tejer un análisis del ser humano cuando éste deja
su humanidad de lado y las máquinas se hacen cargo de ella. No suelo
seguir series que no hayan acabado su emisión pero este año me la
jugué por Preacher (otro drama que mezcla ciencia ficción) semana a
semana y cumplió, ofreciendo algo que sin ser totalmente original
(Preacher está basada en un cómic del mismo nombre) se siente
fresca en un medio dominado por imitaciones de Breaking Bad y GOT. Tal vez
Westworld no cumpla a lo largo de la temporada y se desinfle en el
camino pero aún así, me va haber bastado con ese gran primer
episodio.
Unlike the original film, beyond a theme park (and everything retro it may sound that) here they venture for ambiguity pointing to the deconstruction of video games based on open worlds like GTA or the most obvious example, Red Dead Redemption (both of the Rockstar's factory) and thus weaving an analysis of the human being when he leaves aside his humanity and machines take care of it. I do not usually follow series that have not finished their seasons but this year I played it for Preacher (another drama that mixes science fiction) every week and it fulfilled, offering something without being totally original (Preacher is based on the comic of the same name) it feels fresh in a market dominated by imitations of Breaking Bad and GOT. Maybe Westworld not meet throughout the season and deflate along the way but still, I will have enough with that great first episode.
